The Laboratory of Physiomics and Crop Design

Aims of our scientific proposal in the frame of WELCOME program of the Foundation for Polish Science is to understand plants cellular and molecular mechanisms, which are processing and transmuting absorbed photons energy by photosystem II and I into electrophysiological, redox and hormonal retrograde signaling. Unraveling the basis of these molecular mechanisms will lead to the new innovative biotechnologies for amelioration of plant growth (increased biomass production, assimilation of CO2), development (modification of the cell wall, fiber and wood), health of plants (increase basal and innate resistance to some pathogens). Our research will also lead to the developments of new methods for hydrolysis of the cell wall for bio-fuel production.

 

Our research has large economical, social and educational potential and is a direct continuation of my research from the Stockholm University. We anticipate that the characterization of defined Arabidopsis mutants and transgenic poplar lines will generate new knowledge about key regulators and processes controlling environmental stress signaling network in plants. This knowledge should aid development of novel biotechnologies in plant protection and agricultural productivity, in particular mechanisms controlling the balance between defense activation and biomass accumulation. Applications derived from this research program may profit plant breeding and biofuel processing companies, pharmacological companies and plant improvement institutions. Thus both producers and consumers should benefit from the proposed innovations with potential economical and quality-of-life benefits for large sections of society.
